Workplace Stress

Workplace stress is the response of an employee when presented with a work situation that challenges their ability to cope.

One way of looking at stress is to view it as a response to an intrapersonal conflict (a conflict within oneself), felt both psychologically and emotionally, and is brought about by work related factors.

These work related factors can be physical, such as excessive noise, or psychosocial such a relationship conflicts, role insecurity, and lack of control over own work.

Identified workplace stress risk factors are published on the internet, and available in health and safety publications produced by various Australian State Health and Safety regulatory bodies.

The Stress Risk Factors identified by Health & Safety Queensland and the Safety Executive (UK) Management Standards are combined and shown in
Stress Risk Factors - Examples diagram

Where there are recurring stress related issues in a workplace (e.g symptoms such as crying, loss of tempers, frequent time off, uncharacteristic errors, blaming, refusal to listen, stress related time off etc) then a Stress Risk Management Audit (sometimes referred to as a Stress Risk Management ssessment) can be used to identify and address causes.

A PowerPoint slide show on Workplace Stress is available by clicking on the Stress Risk Management Audit Information Button.
